Car rental in Rome

Counterproductive in the historic centre, useful for the Castelli Romani. Here's how to think about it.

Good to know

Restricted traffic zone and traffic: what to know before driving in Rome

Central Rome has one of the most extensive restricted traffic zones in Italy, active on weekdays with cameras that automatically fine unauthorised entries. Roman traffic also has a well-earned reputation for chaos. If your goal is to see Piazza Navona and the centre, skip the car: the metro, buses and walking cover everything better. If your goal is the Castelli Romani or the Lazio coast, renting makes sense — pick up the car outside the centre (airport or outskirts) and don't attempt to drive it into the restricted zone.

When it's worth renting
The difference is between "driving around Rome" (never) and "using Rome as a base for day trips by car" (often yes).

When it makes sense

For the Castelli Romani, the Lazio coast (Sperlonga, Gaeta), or broader road trips towards Tuscany or Umbria. Pick-up is best arranged at the airport or outskirts.

When it doesn't

For staying in Rome: the metro, buses and walking cover the historic centre better than a car, without the risk of restricted-zone fines or getting stuck in traffic.
